Head coach Larry Brown enters his second season at the Hilltop
Aug 21, 2013
DALLAS (SMU) --- A new era of SMU Basketball begins in January as the Mustangs play their inaugural season in the American Athletic Conference. After opening league play on the road, SMU basketball will make its debut in the renovated Moody Coliseum in a nationally-televised matchup with three-time NCAA champion Connecticut on Saturday, Jan. 4, at 1 p.m. The Mustangs play their first American Athletic Conference contest a few days earlier, visiting Cincinnati on New Year's Day. Defending NCAA champion Louisville comes to Moody Coliseum in the home finale on March 5.
SMU fans will get a chance to see every AAC opponent in Moody Coliseum, as the Mustangs will play each league opponent twice. All 18 American Athletic Conference matchups will be nationally televised. In addition to Louisville, the Mustangs will host 2013 NCAA Tournament teams Temple, Memphis and Cincinnati. SMU will also host games against league foes Houston, Rutgers, UCF and USF.
"This University has made an unbelievable commitment to our program to help us compete in the American Athletic Conference and compete nationally," says Head Coach Larry Brown. "We are excited be in a league with such accomplished basketball programs and coaches."
The $47 million renovation and expansion of Moody Coliseum will be completed in December, so the Mustangs can host all conference games on campus. The renovated Moody Coliseum will provide many new and improved features, including a renovated main entry lobby, expanded concourses with raised ceilings, club seats, loge boxes, private suites, group suites, new event space, offices, team locker rooms and meeting space.
"Moody Coliseum is going to be special," continued Brown. "I hope we have a team our fans will want to see and will be proud of. This is a great time for our program."
The Mustangs return all five starters while adding the No. 14 ranked recruiting class and three transfers that sat out last season. The Mustangs went 15-17 last year with Cannen Cunningham, Jalen Jones, Ryan Manuel, Nick Russell, and Shawn Williams starting the entire season. They are joined by transfers Nic Moore (from Illinois State), Markus Kennedy (from Villanova) and Crandall Head (from Illinois). The recruiting class that is ranked as high as No. 14 includes McDonald's All-American Keith Frazier, one of the nation's top junior college prospects in Yanick Moreira, and a pair of Illinois' Mr. Basketball finalists from the Chicago area in Sterling Brown and Ben Moore.
The non-conference schedule is still being finalized and will be released soon.
All SMU basketball games are broadcast on the Mustangs Radio Network; which includes the flagship KAAM 770 AM in the Dallas-Fort Worth area and smumustangs.com. For season ticket information call 214-SMU-GAME (214-768-4263) or click here.
