In 2008, the SMU basketball program embarked on a basketball, cultural, and educational tour of Senegal and South Africa. The journey started with eight days of class and practice. The Mustangs practiced each day and also spent 25 hours in a Peoples of Africa class taught by Dr. Joci-Caldwell Ryan.
On May 25, the team started the 12-day journey to the continent of Africa. The first five days were in Senegal, where they met the families of teammates Bamba Fall, Papa Dia, and Mouhammad Faye. After a travel day to South Africa, the Mustangs spent five full days there. The Mustangs played three games, performed basketball clinics, visited cultural and historical sites, and took a class in which they journaled each day. The trip is completely chronicled on-line with photos, blogs, journals, reflections, and videos as well as educational links to the locations visited.
