SMU Announces Non-Conference Schedule
June 25, 2014
DALLAS (SMU) - Games at Gonzaga, Indiana and Michigan, as well as home contests with Arkansas and Wyoming, highlight SMU's 2014-15 non-conference basketball schedule.
"We always want our team to play as many high-quality opponents as possible," says head coach Larry Brown. "Our non-conference and conference schedule will give us a chance to play great teams in great environments at home and on the road. There are a lot of incredible opportunities in front of us."
The season opens at Moody Coliseum versus Lamar on Friday, Nov. 14. SMU follows the opener with a visit to Gonzaga as part of the ESPN Tip-Off Marathon on Monday, Nov. 17, followed by a contest at Indiana on Thursday, Nov. 20. SMU then has a seven-game homestand that includes Arkansas (Nov. 25) and Wyoming (Dec. 5) before the road meeting with Michigan on Dec. 20.
The non-conference slate could still see a game or two added, as SMU searches for additional opponents.
This season's games at Gonzaga and at Michigan begin home-and-home series as those teams come to Moody Coliseum in 2015-16. SMU and TCU will not meet in 2014-15 as the teams unable to find a date that worked for the matchup, but the series is expected to resume in 2015-16.
SMU's American Athletic Conference schedule includes two games against defending NCAA Champion Connecticut as well as Cincinnati, Memphis, Tulsa, UCF, Houston, USF and Temple. The Mustangs have only one matchup with East Carolina (home) and Tulane (away). The conference championship will be played March 12-15 (Thursday-Sunday) at the XL Center in Hartford, Connecticut.
SMU enters 2014-15 following a 27-10 season that saw it earn a No. 1 seed in the NIT and eventually reach the title game. SMU was in the top 25 in four of the last five regular season polls, one of five American Athletic Conference teams ranked in the final week of the regular season. SMU finished tied for third in the inaugural season of The American, going 12-6 with two wins over Connecticut as well as wins over Cincinnati and Memphis.
The Mustangs went 18-1 at home, setting a record for home victories that included a 12-1 mark inside Moody Coliseum. SMU also broke its season attendance record and sold out nine of 13 games in Moody.
