The SMU Mustangs are the No. 11 seed for the Conference USA Championship at the FedExForum in Memphis, Tenn. The Mustangs face No. 6 seed UTEP in the first round on Wednesday, March 12, at 2:30 p.m. If the Mustangs advance, No. 3 seed Houston will be waiting for a Thursday afternoon quarterfinal game at 2:30 p.m. The Mustangs open practice in Memphis is 11-11:55 a.m. at the FedExForum followed by media availability from 12-12:15 p.m.

The Mustangs and UTEP split the regular season matchups with the home team winning each time. SMU scored a 99-96 double-overtime victory at Moody Coliseum on March 1. All-Conference USA Third Team honoree Jon Killen scored a career-high 33 points with nine assists to lead SMU while Bamba Fall also scored a career-high 19 points, and Derrick Roberts added 17 points. Killen scored 24 points with 6 assists in the 79-66 loss at UTEP in the league opener on Jan. 9. SMU had won 12 of 15 prior to the recently ended nine-game current slide. The teams have met twice before in the postseason with SMU winning 65-64 in the 1999 WAC tournament and UTEP prevailing 74-70 in the 2001 WAC playoff. In both years, the home team had won the regular season meetings.

SMU and Houston could potentially meet for the 11th time in the postseason. SMU holds an all-time 6-4 edge in tournament play: 2-1 in NCAA Tournament action and 4-3 in SWC Tournament games. The Ponies won NCAA Regional matchups in 1956 and 1965, but lost in 1967. The eighth-ranked Mustangs won 89-76 over 17th-ranked Houston in the 1956 Tournament. SMU eventually advanced to the 1956 Final Four. The last time they faced off in the postseason was a 62-57 SMU triumph in the quarterfinal round of the 1996 SWC tournament in Dallas.

MUSTANGS IN CONFERENCE CHAMPIONSHIPS: SMU is 18-31 all-time in league tournament play with a championship in the 1988 Southwest Conference Tournament. The Mustangs went 11-20 in 21 years in the Southwest postseason classic, 6-9 in the Western Athletic Conference tournament and are 1-2 in the Conference USA Championship. The win came as the Mustangs knocked off Rice 61-59 in their first C-USA playoff game and the teams had split in the regular season. The last time SMU won multiple league tournament games was the 1999 WAC event when the Mustangs defeated UTEP 65-64 in the first round and then UNLV 71-70 in the quarterfinal before falling 57-56 25th-ranked New Mexico in the semifinal. Jon Killen NAMED TO All-CONFERENCE USA THIRD TEAM: In C-USA games, Jon Killen led the league in assists (5.81), was second in minutes (36.25), third in 3-pointers (3.25), sixth in 3FG percentage (.424), eighth in scoring (14.9), 11th in assist/turnover ratio (1.63), and 12th in steals (1.31). He was named Conference USA Player of the Week on Jan. 28. His 12 assists against Houston on Jan. 16 were tied for the most in a league game this season. Overall, he is averaging 5.00 assists (tied for 2nd in C-USA), shooting 40.3 percent from 3-point range (8th in C-USA), making 2.52 3-pointers per game (5th in C-USA) and has a 1.63 assist/turnover ratio (8th in C-USA). Killen had 93 assists in league play this season, which is the sixth-best total in Conference USA history.

Killen is already in the top ten at SMU for career steals (8th at 144) and career 3-pointers (8th at 117). He is 11th in career assists with 362 and needs one to move into at least a tie for tenth. He would be just the third Mustang to be in the top ten in all three categories, joining Jeryl Sasser and Bryan Hopkins. Sasser is 3rd in assists (469), 4th in steals (197), and 6th in 3FG (133). Hopkins is 1st in steals (225), and 2nd in 3FG (256), 8th in assists (396).

Jon Killen NAMED TO C-USA ALL-ACADEMIC TEAM: Killen was named to the C-USA All-Academic Team for the second straight year. The 2008 sqaud, which consists of five student-athletes that have earned a 3.2 cumulative grade point average or better and are a starter or key reserve on the men's basketball team. Seniors Paulius Packevicius of Rice and Killen of SMU are repeat selections. Classmate Taylor Gagnon of East Carolina, Tulsa junior Sam Mitchell and UAB junior Reggie Huffman also made the team. Killen is a business management and sociology major with a 3.45 GPA. In his second season as team captain, Killen serves on SMU's Student-Athlete Advisory Committee and received the Meyer Brothers' Award at SMU for combined academic success, athletic achievement and community involvement.

Bamba Fall scored in double-figures in 13 of 16 conference games, including a career-high 19 points against UTEP on March 1. In conference play, he shot 51.9 percent (8th in C-USA) while averaging 12.4 points (tie for 16th C-USA) and 2.00 blocks (2nd in C-USA). He is averaging 2.10 blocks on the season which is second in the league. He is now second at SMU in career blocks with 176, trailing only Jon Koncak's total of 278.

Derrick Roberts is averaging 10.2 points on the season (27th in C-USA). In league play, he hit 46.8 percent from the field and 41.2 percent from 3-point range (9th in C-USA) while knocking down 1.50 3-pointers per game (tied for 15th in C-USA). He hit 10-of-22 (.455) in the last four conference contests.

In league play, Papa Dia finished seventh in rebounding (6.4) and 26th in scoring (10.9). Those ranks for freshman are first in rebounding and third in scoring. Overall, he is sixth in the league at 6.7 rebounds per game.

LAST GAME: (W 61-58 at Rice on M8) HOUSTON (AP) -- Papa Dia scored 20 points and grabbed 11 rebounds to lead SMU to a 61-58 win Saturday over Rice, which ended the regular season without a victory in Conference USA. Bamba Fall added 14 points off the bench for SMU (10-19, 4-12). Dia's double-double was the freshman's third of the season. Lawrence Ghoram scored 17 points to lead Rice (3-26, 0-16), which has lost 19 in a row heading into next week's conference tournament. Patrick Britton added 16 points for the Owls. Aleks Perka, who finished with nine points, tried tying the game on Rice's final possession but missed two 3-pointers.

THIS SEASON vs. UTEP: EL PASO (AP) (L 79-66 at UTEP on J9) Jon Killen led SMU with a career-high 24 points as the Mustangs fell 79-66 to UTEP at the Don Haskins Center. Stefon Jackson, the nation's eighth leading scorer, totaled 27 points to help lead UTEP in the win in the Conference USA opener for both teams. Marvin Kilgore's 3-pointer capped an 11-0 UTEP run to start the game. SMU responded with a 13-2 run to draw the score even, 13-13, at 12:35. The run for SMU included nine points from Killen. The Miners (10-4, 1-0) broke away over the next few minutes, led 38-26 at halftime and never relinquished the lead. Jon Killen led SMU (6-8, 0-1) with 24 points on 9-of-16 shooting and was 6-of-11 from 3-point range. He also had six rebounds and six assists. Bamba Fall added 13 points and Papa Dia had 12. Ryan Harp had eight points and six assists for SMU. Randy Culpepper came off the bench to score 18 points for UTEP. Victor Ramalho added 14 points and led the team with 10 rebounds. Kilgore added 13 points. UTEP outrebounded SMU 40-30. UTEP converted SMU's 19 turnovers into 27 points. SMU coach Matt Doherty was ejected at 15:20 in the second half for a double technical foul. DALLAS (AP) (W 2ot 99-96 at SMU on M1) Jon Killen scored a career-high 33 points and hit a key 3-pointer, his seventh of the game, late in the second overtime to lead SMU past UTEP 99-96. Bamba Fall added a career-high 19 points for the Mustangs, including two go-ahead foul shots with 48 seconds left in the second overtime. UTEP's Stefon Jackson missed a 3-pointer with four seconds left that would have tied the game. Fall was 9-of-10 at the free throw line for the game and had six rebounds. Marvin Kilgore scored 28 points and Jackson had 27 to lead UTEP (16-11, 7-7 Conference USA). This was the most points by SMU in a conference game since a 104-87 home-win over UTEP on Jan. 20, 2000. Killen, who was 7-of-11 from 3-point range, sank his final one with 2:16 left to give SMU (9-18, 3-11) a two-point lead. Killen also has nine assists. Derrick Roberts added 17 points for the Mustangs. He also was charged with defending Jackson, who was held scoreless in the overtimes. Papa Dia added 10 points and had a team-high eight rebounds. Paulius Ritter also had a career-high nine points for SMU. Dia and Ritter both fouled out late in regulation.

SERIES HISTORY vs. HOUSTON: This would be the 60th meeting between the Mustangs and Cougars. SMU trails 38-22 in the all-time series and have fell in all five meetings in Conference USA. These teams played twice in non-league action after the breakup of the Southwest Conference before becoming conference foes again. SMU's Alex Malone added 15 points and 7 rebounds while Jon Killen had a career-best 12 assists in the effort. Dion Dowell came off the bench to score 21 points and grab 9 rebounds to lead Houston. Dowell hit 9 of 12 from the field, including 3 of 6 3-pointers. Robert McKiver scored 20 points and Kelvin Lewis had 16 for the Cougars (12-3, 1-0). Bamba Fall scored 13 and had 10 rebounds for SMU (6-9, 0-2). It was his third career double-double. Fall also had four blocks in the game and now has 151 for his career to tie Patrick Simpson for third all-time at SMU. Ryan Harp scored 12 as the fourth Mustang in double-figures. HOUSTON (AP) (L, 69-47 at UH on F16) Cougars' McKiver scored 21 points for Houston, which defeated SMU 69-47. Kelvin Lewis added 11 points for the Cougars (19-5, 8-2), who led 41-18 at halftime. Dion Dowell grabbed 8 rebounds to go along with his 7 points. Fall, who was 7 of 8 from the field, had 16 points to lead SMU (8-15, 2-8). Houston never trailed. SMU shot 35 percent from the field, just 28 percent during the first half. SMU hit just 3 of 18 shots beyond the 3-point arc -- 17 percent.
