RENO, Nev. -- Michael Harris scored 25 points to lead Rice over SMU 63-47 Thursday in the quarterfinals of the Western Athletic Conference Tournament.

J.R. Harrison added 11 points for the third-seeded Owls (19-10), who advanced to play second-seeded UTEP in Friday's semifinals. The Miners beat Hawaii 80-62 earlier Thursday.

Patrick Simpson had 15 points and 11 rebounds and Bryan Hopkins added 14 points for SMU (14-14).

The Owls held the Mustangs to 31.7 percent shooting for the game, holding SMU without a field goal for the first 8:34 of the second half. That allowed Rice to extend a 32-18 halftime lead to 46-23.

Harris, a first-team All-WAC performer, had three consecutive dunks to put the Owls up 52-27 with 8:04 to play. Rice's biggest lead came at 54-28 with 7:11 left.

Rice shot 51 percent from the field, including 57.1 percent in the second half.
