EL PASO (AP) -- Omar Thomas scored 26 points to lead UTEP to a 79-74 victory over SMU on Sunday. Thomas hit 11-of-17 from the field and 3-of-4 from the free throw line. He also had eight rebounds for UTEP (23-7, 13-4 WAC), which won its fourth straight from SMU and broke the Mustangs' four-game conference win streak.
SMU took a 57-50 with 12:41 left on a jumper by Bryan Hopkins, but the Miners responded with a 15-0 run to take a 65-57 lead with 9:33 left on a 3-pointer by Filiberto Rivera. SMU pulled to within three points on a layup by Eric Castro with seven seconds left to cut it to 77-74, but Rivera threw a full-court pass to Jason Williams for a dunk with four seconds left.
Patrick Simpson led SMU (13-2, 8-8) with 22 points. Castro added 16 and Hopkins scored 13.
The game was tied at 37-37 at the half and the lead changed hands seven times during the game. UTEP shot 57 percent from the field to 50 percent for SMU.
