DALLAS (AP) -- Omar Thomas scored 22 points to lead Texas-El Paso to a 60-55 victory over SMU on Thursday night.
Devon Pearson scored 19 points to lead SMU (8-8, 3-5), which has lost four of its last five. SMU was playing without star Bryan Hopkins, who was nursing a sprained right wrist. Eric Castro had 14 points and 11 boards for his second double-double of the season.
The win moved UTEP into a tie for first place with Nevada in the Western Athletic Conference.
Filiberto Rivers added 13 points for UTEP (17-3, 7-1). The Miners have won 13 of their last 14 games.
SMU shot 51 percent from the field and outrebounded UTEP, 33-26, but the Mustangs went cold down the stretch and did not score a basket in the final 2:57.
It was SMU's first loss this season when shooting better than 50 percent from the floor.
