Soccerology Diary

I am happy to report that the SMU Women's soccer team is sitting at the top of the Conference USA standings and are looking to continue their 4-game winning streak here in Dallas this weekend!

After a disappointing overtime loss to Rice, we spent fall break working hard in practice to turn things around for our team. Our next 4 games were on the road - with unbeaten UTEP as our first away match - so we knew we needed to get things going our way, and quickly! After what seemed like a million days of practice in a row, the team headed to El Paso to battle against the Miners on a "less than desirable" field surface with a hostile crowd on the sidelines. I know everyone on the team was looking for revenge after losing to UTEP last year in conference play, and it showed on the scoreboard... we broke the Miners' winning streak, 2-1. We finished up the weekend down at College Station, our FAVORITE place to play, with a 2-0 win against Tulane. By the way, congrats to Ashley Gunter for picking up CUSA defensive player of the week honors for her hard work that weekend!

Road trips are always tough to work through, and our next road trip was the worst combination of connecting flights and long bus rides we had on our schedule. Nevertheless, we left the east coast with solid wins against Marshall and East Carolina. We are now 6-1 in conference play, and have only 2 conference games to go - thankfully, they are here in Dallas, but they are going to be tough games. We take on UAB on Friday at 7:00 pm and Memphis on Sunday at 1:00 pm. Come watch as we finalize our first place finish in CUSA regular season play before we head to Houston for the conference tournament.

Oh, and I'd like to say good job for everyone's work on and off the field the past few weeks... everyone at some point was swamped with midterms, tests, and projects, but I think everyone came out of it with some good grades! Also, happy birthday to Greta, who just celebrated her 20th birthday!

Until next time,
