Soccerology Diary

August 26, 2005

Well, it’s that time of year again… time for SMU Women’s Soccer to get the 2005 season underway! I don’t know about ya’ll, but I have been anticipating the start of this season since November of last year. I know I speak for the entire team when I say we can’t wait to start competing now that we are finished with the usual “delights” of preseason: two-a-days, ice baths, blisters, and bus trips to UTD with the SMU Men’s soccer team. However, this preseason has been anything but usual for our team.

First of all, the freshmen and transfers this year are great additions to our team and our school. They all bring important qualities to our team on and off the field that are vital to our success this fall. We recently had a team indoor barbeque that was fun not only because the food was great (much thanks to Ashley, Allison, Greta, and Marisa for letting the entire team cookout at their house!), but because it gave the team a chance to hang out and get to know the new players better. We have a great group this year!

Our preseason has been unusual this year also because we have been learning a new formation that will hopefully create a lot of scoring opportunities and improve our defense. I’ll be the first to admit that we were unsure at first about the new playing style; however, when we execute it correctly, the goals are a welcomed reward. Our scrimmage against SFA is a good example of this – we started the game off a little sluggish (being on a bus all day didn’t help!), but eventually created some great scoring chances on the way to a 2-0 victory.

Finally, this year’s preseason has been different in the fact that it is the best preseason I have been a part of so far at SMU. Although I missed playing here and there during preseason due to injury, it is obvious to me that the energy and talent of this year’s team is the best I have been fortunate enough to be a part of. In fact, being injured has shown me just how much I love this game and can’t wait to be on the field with my teammates again. I am so proud to be a member of the SMU Women’s soccer team – this is going to be an exciting year for SMU soccer!

We start the season on the road against Texas on Friday, August 26. It will be a pivotal game for us to show everything we have worked for this preseason! Our home opener is against TCU on Friday, September 2 at 7:00 p.m. I hope to see you all there as we earn our first home win of 2005! From all of us here on the SMU Women’s soccer team, I’m Alyssa Pembroke… stay classy Dallas, Texas.
