PROVIDENCE, R.I. (American/SMU) -- The American Athletic Conference announced its 18-game schedule format for the 2017-18 men's basketball season today. SMU, the reigning AAC champions, will play seven conference opponents twice: Cincinnati, East Carolina, Houston, Tulane, UCF, USF and Wichita State. The Mustangs have one matchup with four league foes, hosting Memphis and Temple, while making road trips to Connecticut and Tulsa.
The American Men's Basketball Championship is March 8-11 (Thursday-Sunday) at the Amway Center in Orlando, Florida.
The non-conference schedule includes home games against USC and Boise State, as well as a game at TCU. The Mustangs will also play in the Battle 4 Atlantis in the Bahamas Nov. 22-24 in a field that includes Arizona, Tennessee, North Carolina State, Northern Iowa, Purdue, Villanova and Western Kentucky.
The 2016-17 Mustangs finished No. 11 in the Associated Press poll after winning the American Athletic Conference season and tournament championships en route to the NCAA Tournament. It was the second championship sweep for SMU in the past three seasons. The Mustangs won a program-record 30 games (30-5) that included going 17-1 in conference play and 18-0 in Moody Coliseum. SMU had two of the longest winning streaks in program history at 16 games (third) and 10 games (tied fourth) in a stretch that saw 26 victories in 27 outings. The Mustangs surpassed the 100,000 attendance mark for the fourth straight year, which are the top four seasons in program history.
