"Heartbreaker in Huntington"
It is midnight and we have about an hour left on our charter flight home to Love Field. I just finished grading the tape of our game. It took two hours to grade each possession as we write down comments, make clips to show our team and grade our players on defense, smart plays, assists, deflections, etc. Tomorrow we will give the team feedback so we can learn from the game.
I will say this: I am proud of our team, even in defeat. We competed. We showed some toughness!
After being down 8 points with 16 minutes to go we stormed back on the road to take the lead with 8 minutes left in the ball game. There were some exciting plays on both ends of the floor. We ended up with the ball with 15 seconds to go tied at 50. We wanted to hold the ball and run a play with 8 seconds. This gives us time to shoot and get a tip in if we miss. Derek Williams had a good look at a runner in the lane and Marshall's Markel Humphrey rebounded with 3 seconds to go and fired up a 75 foot shot that banked in at the buzzer. We lost by three and our guys were crushed!
After the game, I told them how proud I was to be their coach as they showed the toughness to win. They performed well, especially in the second half of a road game. Unfortunately, they weren't rewarded with a victory, but they were winners in my eyes.
Lord, get us home safely!
Pony Up!
