"Whispering Pines"
On Sunday, several former Mustang players met at Whispering Pines in Trinity, TX to enjoy some bad golf, some good food and a lot of laughs!
A few months ago former players David Miller, Donnie Berg, Bob Begert and I were having some lunch and we discussed the idea of putting together an event that would bring together former players while raising some funds for our program. The three of them quickly came up with organizing a golf event at the #1 rated course in Texas, Whispering Pines! Former SMU great, Denny Holman, got involved and the four men made things happen....quickly!
We all arrived Sunday morning and played 18 holes! It was an awesome day! This track was beautiful....what a piece of real estate....pine trees, lakes, deer.....but not many birdies! Denny organized the foursomes. I was paired with Denny, Bob Begert and David Miller. Two out of three...not bad!
Love ya Begert!
Really...mean it!
My opening tee shot was a thing of beauty in front of this prestigious crew! My approach shot on this par 4 dog leg left was off to the right. I chipped long and made a 10-footer for par!
I should have quit then! Boy, did I stink! At least these former players realize I have been working hard building "their program" back to national prominence and not spending too much time on the links!
Denny then put together a two-man alternate shot shootout won by former players Copley Broer and Mike Jaccar! Copley has "game" and Jaccar has....has...had a GREAT partner that he road like Secretariat! The last hole came down to Bobby "Bad News" Rollings and special guest George "Garo" Killebrew SMU '85.
This was fun as we had 8 carts flying around with 8 guys teeing off on each hole! The energy was great and the jabs were flying!
After the golf we had a fabulous dinner. Unfortunately, I had Jaccar, "Bad News" and Begert at my table! I overcame that and still managed to enjoy my meal, even though Begert got the last apple pie a la mode! I bet he never threw it out of the post either?
Then we sat outside around a big fire pit and told stories and laughed...a lot! We all loved hearing Mustang greats Gene Phillips and Ira Terrell telling stories from their ABA and NBA days. Gene once scored 51 points at UT...with no three point line and no shot clock! Wow!
It was great to have these former players sharing stories with each other. It was wonderful to witness the relationships in full bloom! I wish my team could have been there to see the fellowship and respect these men had for each other while expressing their passion for SMU and what being on the Hilltop did for them. Beautiful stuff.
