Six student-athletes were in attendance at the recognition ceremony, where they were presented a student-athlete sash. SMU President R. Gerald Turner addressed the audience, which included friends and family members of the graduates. During his comments, President Turner congratulated the graduates and thanked their families and university officials for the assistance and support given to each of the student-athletes during their academic career at SMU.
Graduates Aliaksei Patsevich (men's basketball), Joey Fontana and Robert Parker, Jr. (football), Juan Castillo and Jaime Ibarra (men's soccer) and Edyta Cieplucha (women's tennis) were in attendance, while David Larsson (men's swimming), Kevin Grenier (football) and Amber Evans (track and field) were unable to attend.
Rick Hart, SMU Director of Athletics, also stated the goal of the athletics department is to prepare students for life. He congratulated the graduates on their accomplishments, and reminded them that they would always have a home and a family in Dallas at SMU.
The graduation recognition ceremony was the first of its kind for student-athletes at SMU, and was designed to honor and thank graduating student-athletes for their service to the university, as well as honor and recognize the graduates for their hard-earned success.
