SMU Student-Athletes Visit Children's Medical Center Dallas
Oct. 16, 2013
DALLAS (SMU) – During SMU’s fall break, representatives from the Student-Athlete Advisory Committee (SAAC) traveled to the Children’s Medical Center Dallas. The student-athletes came with bags full of toys for patients at the not-for-profit hospital. The donation was made possible from tickets collected in August at the Student-Athlete Welcome Back Event at Dave & Buster’s. A total of 641,044 Dave & Buster’s tickets were exchanged for gaming stations (X-Box & Kinect), board games, stuffed animals, puzzles, sports balls, electronics, remote control cars and iPods for the children.
“It was such an eye-opening experience to visit the children’s hospital,” SAAC President Lauryn Bodden said. “It’s really rewarding to know that these kids will appreciate all the toys.”
Junior Lauryn Bodden (women’s soccer), senior Lisa Egarter (track & field), senior Caroline Daly (volleyball), junior Raven Short (women’s basketball), junior Gabriel Andonie (men’s swimming), junior Pablo Lara Carrillo (men’s swimming), senior Helena Perez (track & field) and junior Emma Roberts (equestrian) hope their toy delivery will bring cheer and joy to the young patients at Children's.
“These young men and women truly represented SMU Athletics in a positive manner and reflected our goal of being involved in the Dallas community. We thank them for their time and effort," Director of Life Skills/SAAC Advisor Allison Singleton said.
SAAC plans to spread its joy with other toy deliveries throughout the year. SAAC is the voice of the student-athletes on campus and supplies essential feedback to the athletics department and other campus organizations in order to increase student-athlete welfare. The committee provides recommendations on proposed conference and NCAA legislation and addresses national issues that may concern student-athletes. By providing opportunities to recognize athletes for academic achievements, promoting school spirit at sporting events and presenting ways to interact with the community, SAAC strives to enhance the SMU experience.
