Last night we hosted the 2013 Mustang Club Morgan Campaign Victory Celebration and there was much to celebrate! The Mustang Club, our annual fundraising arm, generated a record $2.91M in gift revenues to support SMU student-athletes. These are "unrestricted" donations, which means we can dedicate them to our most important and impactful needs - which often fluctuate from year-to-year.

Overall annual giving, including unrestricted and "restricted" (gifts earmarked for a specific project or purpose) gifts, tallied over $8M! This figure helps to provide academic support services and strengthens our competitiveness in key areas such as hiring and retaining the best coaches. We are particularly grateful for the multi-year investment made by the Circle of Champions in support of our vision to become more nationally competitive in all that we do.

Finally, total athletics giving - including unrestricted, restricted, capital, planned gifts and endowments - surpassed $22.6M for the just-completed fiscal year. (Note: These are unofficial figures and should increase over the next two weeks as we close the books on the fiscal year.) Wow! It is humbling to learn that so many generous people care about Mustang Athletics and the betterment of our student-athletes. Incredible!

The most powerful thing about these accomplishments is that so many individuals played a key role in our success. For example:

  • 2,187 Mustang Club members (to-date)
  • Over 50 local volunteers and 28 regional representatives
  • Almost $150K from National Mustang Club (new revenues from outside of Dallas)
  • Our first-ever six-figure Mustang Club annual donor

These numbers illustrate why I am so passionate about what I do for a living. Imagine working with (and for) people who believe so much in what you do that they invest their time, energy and resources in support of it. Truly inspiring!

And now, to the mailbag...

Tyler (Kouts, Ind.): Do you foresee SMU being involved in the American Athletic Conference for the long term and what excites you the most about joining this new conference? Thanks again and Pony Up!!!

Answer: We are excited to be among the charter members of the American Athletic Conference. It is a quality collection of schools and athletics programs; and we feel we can compete for championships in a number of sports. The national television exposure will provide us with unprecedented coverage in football, men's basketball and women's basketball. Our focus is on establishing SMU as a top program in The American. If we accomplish this goal, great things will happen!

The mailbag was a little light this week. I guess summer has officially arrived! Keep them coming. Your input is important to my column! Remember, if you have a question or concern, contact me through this form, or email us at smumustangs@smu.edu. You can also reach me on Twitter at @AD_RickHart.

Thanks to all and Pony Up!

Rick Hart, Director of Athletics
